A Bunny In The Time of Easter

EspaƱol

After looking at my calendar today I could not believe that Easter is almost a week away. Where did the time go? It feels like Christmas was only a few weeks ago! But this got me thinking about how we used to celebrate Easter in Colombia, and I really shouldn’t say celebrate because it didn’t feel like a celebration at all. It would all start during Holy Week which consisted of going to church every day, something I dreaded, and then going home to pray the rosary with my grandmother, which is the very last thing any child wants to do. The one thing I did look forward to were the processions during Holy Week for two reasons. One, I got to hang out with all my friends and cousins who also went to the processions and two, I got to hold my own candle during the whole procession which made me feel important because for some reason we never got one of those candle wax catchers and then we would get hot wax all over our hands, whoever cringed in pain first would lose, so that was always fun, in a sick kind of way. Another fun activity our church started doing, playing movies in church. Well, they were religious movies and nothing exciting but the fact that we got to watch a movie in church, for free, was very thrilling.

So imagine my surprise when we arrived in the US and saw that not only Holy Week was not celebrated in the outrageous way they celebrate it in Colombia but that the most exciting thing about Easter was getting a visit from the Easter Bunny and go egg hunting. It was mind blowing and I couldn’t really understand the whole thing. What does a bunny have to do with the resurrection of Christ? Which for years I related to pain, blood, sacrifice and death. And what about the colored eggs? It… was… INSANE! But, like any other young kid I just took it for what it was and shrugged it off. It wasn’t until I became an adult that I learned that rabbits are a symbol of fertility which is seen as a new beginning. Same for the eggs, they have to do with rebirth, new life, new beginnings. Or so I’ve been told.

But it really doesn’t matter how we end up celebrating because there is nothing like seeing my niece’s face filled with joy every time we go to an Easter egg hunt or whenever she sees the presents the Easter Bunny left for her. It is absolutely priceless!

Happy Easter in advance! =)

  1. It is so interesting to learn how other cultures celebrate the holidays. That is funny about the hot wax and I never knew why we had the bunny and eggs until I read your post, lol šŸ™‚

    1. We actually had this conversation today and most people really don't know much about why we have bunnies and eggs for Easter. Pretty funny. Thanks for stopping by Lila.
