Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets
I’ve been making these air fryer chicken nuggets for years, tweaking the seasonings, experimenting with different coatings, and adjusting the cooking time and temperature along the way. After all that trial and error, I truly believe I’ve finally perfected the recipe! They’re so good that they’re now one of the appetizers people request most often whenever we get together.
These nuggets aren’t just great as an appetizer! I also love adding them to a fresh, crispy salad for an easy meal or serving them with tater tots or mac and cheese. Trust me, they’re a hit with kids and adults alike!

The Ingredients You Will Need
- Chicken. Use boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenderloins. Both are lean, tender, and mild in flavor, making them perfect for homemade chicken nuggets.
- Seasonings. This is where you can customize the flavor! My go-to seasonings are paprika (sometimes smoked paprika), chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. For a little extra heat, I occasionally add cayenne pepper, too.
- Butter and oil. The melted butter adds a touch of richness, while the olive oil helps the chicken brown beautifully and allows the breadcrumbs to adhere. I use unsalted butter and olive oil.
- Panko breadcrumbs. These are the secret to getting that deliciously crispy coating! Panko breadcrumbs are lighter and flakier than regular breadcrumbs, helping the nuggets develop a crunchy exterior while staying tender inside.
- Powdered sugar. This ingredient is optional, but I highly recommend giving it a try! It adds a subtle sweetness that balances the savory seasonings and gives the nuggets an extra layer of flavor.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets
- Cut the chicken breasts or tenderloins into 1-inch (2.54 cm) pieces and season them with the spices. Let them rest for 10-15 minutes.
- Add the melted butter and oil to the chicken and toss until evenly coated.

- In a large Ziploc bag, combine the Panko breadcrumbs, spices, and powdered sugar (if using). Shake to mix.
- Add the chicken pieces to the bag, seal, and shake until thoroughly coated.
- Preheat the air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 5 minutes. Then, arrange the chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for 9–10 minutes, flipping halfway. Cook in batches if necessary. Serve immediately.

Diana’s Pro Tips 💡
- Cut the chicken into evenly sized pieces so they cook evenly and finish around the same time. This also helps prevent smaller pieces from drying out while larger ones finish cooking.
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. This allows the hot air to circulate around them, helping the coating turn golden and crispy. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Flip halfway through cooking to help them brown evenly on both sides. For food safety, use a meat thermometer to make sure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

Serve Them With Your Favorite Dipping Sauces
These delicious chicken nuggets pair perfectly with your favorite dipping sauces, such as chicken dipping sauce, honey mustard, ranch, or classic ketchup. Looking for more ideas? - Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 5 minutes.
- Add the melted butter and olive oil to the chicken and toss until evenly coated.

Notes
- *For reference, two medium-sized boneless, skinless chicken breasts weigh approximately 0.75 to 1 pound (about 340 to 450 grams total).
- The chili powder adds a little extra flavor and warmth, while the powdered sugar adds a subtle sweetness to the coating. Both can be omitted if desired.
- Adjust the seasonings to your taste, or add your favorite spices, such as oregano or cayenne pepper for extra heat.
- Store leftover chicken nuggets in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
- For the best results, reheat the nuggets in the air fryer at 350°F (180°C) until heated through and crispy, about 3–5 minutes. Avoid reheating them in the microwave, as the coating will become soft rather than crispy.
