Healthy Orange Chicken

This amazing recipe is a healthier take on the classic orange chicken but with all the flavor. It is not deep fried, contains a lower amount of sodium, and uses fresh orange juice and brown sugar for sweetness.

Ingredients
  

  • lbs chicken breast or chicken thighs cut into small pieces
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Sesame seeds (Optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (Optional)

Marinade

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • tsp baking soda
  • ¼ cup (59 ml) water

Orange sauce

  • ½ cup (118 ml) fresh orange juice
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange zest
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce **See notes
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp red pepper flakes **See notes
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch

Instructions
 

  • Mix the ingredients for the marinade in a medium-sized bowl. Add the chicken and stir well. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, mix all of the ingredients for the orange sauce and set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and stir-fry until golden brown (about 4-5 minutes).
  • Add the sauce to the pan and stir well to coat the chicken. Lower the heat to medium-low and simmer for a few minutes until it thickens.
  • Serve immediately and garnish with the sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

Notes

  • You can substitute hoisin sauce with teriyaki or oyster sauce.
  • Use your favorite hot chili sauce instead of the red pepper flakes to add spiciness to this dish.
