Easy Tequila Sunrise Recipe With Only 3 Ingredients

If there’s a cocktail that looks like it took way more effort than it actually did, it’s the Tequila Sunrise. It’s one of my favorites to make because it just takes three ingredients, no shaking, no fancy technique, and somehow it comes out looking like a sunset in a glass every single time.

This was one of the first cocktails I learned how to make because I couldn’t get over how beautiful it looked. Seeing that gorgeous reddish gradient, the orange slice, the cherry on top, it felt fancy without being complicated. And here’s the thing: the tequila is so subtle you can barely taste it, but it’s just as good without it. I sometimes swap it for a lemon-lime soda, and honestly? Still delicious.

πŸ’‘ Fun Fact

The modern Tequila Sunrise was created in the early 1970s by two bartenders in Sausalito, California. It quickly became a nationwide favorite, and its popularity grew so much that Jose Cuervo even printed the recipe on the back of its tequila bottles.

Tequila Sunrise Ingredients

You only need three ingredients to make this, and they’re all easy to find at any grocery store or liquor store.

  • Tequila – The main ingredient that turns this drink into a cocktail. Use blanco tequila for a clean, crisp taste. Or, reposado (my favorite) if you want a warm, mellow flavor that pairs well with the citrus of the orange juice.
  • Orange juice – Adds sweetness, acidity, and freshness while balancing the tequila. Freshly squeezed orange juice gives the cocktail the brightest flavor, but good-quality store-bought juice also works well.
  • Grenadine – A sweet pomegranate syrup that creates that gorgeous red-to-orange “sunrise” gradient. It also adds a touch of fruity sweetness to balance the citrus.
  • Ice – Keeps the drink cold and refreshing while slightly diluting it as it melts, helping mellow the tequila and blend the flavors.
  • Orange slice (for garnishing) – Adds a fresh citrus aroma and gives the cocktail a polished, inviting presentation.
  • Maraschino cherry (also for garnishing) – A classic finishing touch that complements the grenadine and adds a pop of color and sweetness.

Make It a Mocktail

Not a fan of tequila or alcohol? You can easily turn this into a refreshing mocktail by replacing the tequila with lemon-lime soda or sparkling water, or simply leaving it out altogether.

Basic Tools for Making a Tequila Sunrise

One of the best things about a Tequila Sunrise is that you don’t need a cocktail shaker or blender. Simply build the drink directly in the glass, making it one of the easiest cocktails to prepare at home.

  • Highball or Collins glass – The traditional glass for serving a Tequila Sunrise. Its tall shape beautifully showcases the signature sunrise effect.
  • Cocktail jigger – Ensures you measure the tequila and grenadine accurately for a perfectly balanced cocktail.
  • Cocktail silicone ice cube trays – Great for making large, crystal-clear ice cubes that melt more slowly, keeping your drink colder longer without watering it down too quickly.
  • Bar spoon (optional) – Helps you mix the orange juice with the tequila and slowly pour the grenadine into the glass to create the cocktail’s beautiful layered effect.
  • Citrus juicer (if using fresh oranges) – Makes it easy to squeeze fresh orange juice for the brightest, freshest flavor.
  • Cocktail pick (optional) – Adds a polished touch by holding the orange slice and maraschino cherry together.

Ingredients

  • Ice
  • 2 oz tequila
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • ΒΌ oz grenadine (or to taste)
  • 1 orange slice (for garnish)
  • 1 maraschino cherry (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Fill a tall glass (highball or Collins glass) with ice.
  • Pour the tequila and orange juice over the ice. Stir gently to combine.
  • Slowly pour the grenadine into the glass. It will sink to the bottom and gradually rise, creating the signature sunrise effect.
  • Garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use your favorite tequila. Blanco tequila is the traditional choice and has a clean, crisp flavor, while reposado adds a smoother, slightly oaky taste.
  • Fresh orange juice is best. Freshly squeezed orange juice gives this cocktail the brightest, freshest flavor, but good-quality store-bought orange juice works well too.
  • Pour the grenadine last. Slowly pour it over the back of a spoon or along the inside of the glass so it sinks to the bottom and creates the signature sunrise effect.
  • Don’t stir after adding the grenadine. Serve the cocktail as is to preserve the beautiful layered look. Guests can stir it themselves before drinking if they prefer.
  • Adjust the sweetness. Start with ΒΌ ounce of grenadine and add a little more if you like a sweeter cocktail.
  • Chill your ingredients. Cold orange juice and tequila help keep the drink refreshing and reduce how quickly the ice melts.
