Best-Ever BLT Sandwich Recipe

This amazing BLT sandwich is one of my favorites because of the satisfying combination of flavors and textures. Plus, you can make it in just a few minutes! This is great when you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen but still want to have something delicious to eat.

And even though a BLT is made with simple ingredients, it is still one of the best comfort foods that you can find. You get an amazing crunch from crispy bacon and toasted bread. Then you have the softness and earthy flavor of the lettuce. Followed by the sweet and juicy taste of the fresh tomatoes. It really doesn’t get better than that!

Another reason why I love this recipe is because of its versatility. Depending on my mood, I will make it with either regular-cut bacon or thick-cut bacon. Sometimes I will use sourdough, or my favorite, butter bread. And others, I’ll just give it another layer of flavor by adding cheese or avocado!

Ingredients For Making A BLT Sandwich

Scroll down to the recipe card to see the complete list of ingredients.

  • Bread. Use your favorite bread, like butter bread (which is what I usually use), sourdough, or brioche. I highly recommend that you use a thick-sliced bread since we’ll be toasting it, and that usually makes it thinner.
  • Lettuce. I love using crunchy lettuce, like Romaine or green leaf lettuce, for this recipe.
  • Tomato. In the summer, I always make my BLTs with the heirloom tomatoes that I grow in my garden. But any other time, I will use store-bought tomatoes on the vine because of their sweetness or beefsteak tomatoes, which are larger and heartier.
  • Mayonnaise. Use your favorite type or brand of mayonnaise. You can also use Miracle Whip if you prefer.
  • Butter. Spreading regular butter on the bread before toasting it in the pan will add flavor and texture. You can also use margarine.
  • Other ingredients. Add avocados for a creamy flavor and texture. Cheese is another ingredient that blends very well with the bacon and the toasted bread.
  • Salt and pepper. Have you ever wondered why sandwiches made at restaurants always taste better than the ones you make at home? Their secret is always adding salt and pepper to taste. 😉👍🏻

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of bacon should I use when making a BLT sandwich?

Any type of bacon works for this recipe. Regular-cut bacon will give you a fantastic crunch, while thick-cut bacon provides a meatier and stronger bacon flavor. You can also use turkey bacon if you prefer.

How to cook bacon when making a BLT sandwich?

You can make regular-cut bacon using one of these three methods. Please note that thick-cut bacon will take longer.

  • Oven: Bake it in the oven at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 15-20 minutes or until crispy.
  • Stove top: Cook it using a griddle or pan over medium heat for 8-12 minutes or until crispy.
  • Air fryer: My preferred method. Cook it in the air fryer at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 10 minutes or until crispy.

What other ingredients can I add to a BLT sandwich?

  • Adding avocados will make a BLT more creamy and super delicious.
  • Use different types of cheese, like mild cheddar, Colby, or pepper jack, to give it a little kick.
  • Hot honey. I know I’m late to the game, but I discovered hot honey on my last trip to NYC, and now I add it to everything! And trust me when I say this, hot honey makes this BLT sandwich out of this world delicious.

How to assemble a BLT sandwich?

There is no science behind the assembly of a great BLT sandwich, but this is how I do it.

  • Start with toasted bread and spread it with a good amount of mayo.
  • Layer with one or two leaves of lettuce.
  • Make another layer with the tomato slices.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Place the bacon on top of the tomatoes.
  • Spread the second slice of toasted bread with more mayo and place it on top of the bacon.

Equipment Needed For a BLT Sandwich

  • Griddle or pan I love using good non-stick pans like these to perfectly toast the bread.

  • Air fryer This is the air fryer that I have at home, and it is great for making perfectly crispy bacon.
