- Olive oil and butter. Use a small amount of each to brown the chicken breasts in the pan. Combining these two ingredients gives the chicken a beautiful color and flavor.
- Chicken Breasts. Use boneless, skinless chicken breasts for this recipe. Lately, I’ve been using thin chicken breasts to make things easier which are easily found at most grocery stores. You can also slice regular-sized chicken breasts lengthwise or pound them with a mallet to even them out.
- Garlic. As with most Italian recipes, garlic is a must and you can use as much of it as you want. I usually use 2-3 minced garlic cloves, but you can use more if you wish.
- Chicken stock. The best stock for this recipe is chicken flavored but you can also use vegetable stock if that’s what’s available.
- Heavy cream. Usually found as “heavy whipping cream” at most grocery stores. I do not recommend using light cream or half or half because they have less fat and the best part of this recipe is its thick and creamy sauce.
- Parmesan cheese. This ingredient not only adds that delicious flavor you get from Parmesan cheese, but it also adds texture and lots of creaminess.
- Spices. Add your favorite spices to this dish. I love making it with thyme, oregano, and some chili flakes to add a little kick. You can also use Italian seasoning, rosemary, parsley, or basil.
- Sun-dried tomatoes. I think this is what sets this recipe apart from other creamy sauces. It adds a sweet and tangy flavor to the sauce and you can add as much as you want.
- Fresh basil. For garnishing!

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it called “Marry Me Chicken”?
This is a pretty controversial name, mainly because a lot of food bloggers use this title to essentially describe their recipes as the ones you should make if you want to get a marriage proposal. Honestly, I think it sounds kind of silly, especially if you don’t know the story behind this dish.
The truth is that this recipe got its name when the recipe developer was highly complimented on its wonderful flavor when it was made. Since then, cooks and food bloggers like myself have adapted it by changing, adjusting, adding, or substituting the ingredients to our liking. No proposals are expected once it’s served! 😊
Can I use a lighter cream or milk to make the sauce in Marry Me Chicken?
Listen, in your kitchen, you can do as you please. Having said this, I highly recommend you use a heavy cream for the sauce because it will make it thick and creamy. A lighter cream or milk will just make it runny.
Can I skip adding the sun-dried tomatoes to Marry Me Chicken Sauce?
Short answer: yes. Long answer: if you do, you will end up making a sauce very similar to Alfredo sauce, which is still delicious but not the sauce typically served in a Marry Me Chicken recipe.
What kind of Parmesan cheese can I use for Marry Me Chicken?
The best Parmesan cheese when making a creamy sauce will always be freshly grated. It has a much better flavor and it melts easily in the sauce making it silky and smooth. You can also buy grated Parmesan cheese, but it will not melt as easily. The same goes for the grated Parmesan cheese you can get in a green bottle, it will add the tangy flavor of fresh Parmesan cheese, but it will also make it gritty or lumpy.
What can I serve with Marry Me Chicken?
The best part about this dish is that it goes with anything! Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is pasta, but you can also serve it with rice or mashed potatoes. Or simply serve it with a side of steamed or stir-fried vegetables.
How can I store leftover Marry Me Chicken?
Refrigerate it in an air-tight container for up to 3-5 days. Reheat it in the microwave and add one or two tablespoons of milk or water to thin out the sauce.
You can also freeze it for up to 3 months, however, I don’t recommend it because the fat in creamy sauces tends to separate when reheated.
